Welcome! I'm your study guide, molly. I've been a licensed LMT in Maryland since 2017. I am a practicing massage therapist, business owner, and former paralegal. I've created this guide to help students of massage therapy work their way through the tedious regulations that comprise the content for the Jurisprudence (often abbreviated JP) exam for licensure.
There's no quick-fix to study for this exam - you just have to read the rules. This study guide will give you the same content that you can find online, but with a side-along, plain language translation that will help you keep your attention tuned and understand the text.
Nothing in this study guide is intended to provide legal advice. The sole purpose of this study guide is to help people study for the JP exam. If you have questions about how the Maryland regulations apply to your situation, consult an attorney.
We begin with the Annotated Code of Maryland, because this is the text that is passed by the legislature in Annapolis, that establishes the existence of the Board of Massage Therapy Examiners and the governing law. This legislations gives the broader picture of regulations governing massage therapists. The link to the official online Annotated Code appears below - but you don’t need to go there now. All the content you need is contained in this guide.

Next, we will review the COMAR (COde of MAryland Regulations), which gives the important details and specifics that the Board defines from the more general Annotated Code. The link to the official COMAR online publication appears below - but you don't need to go there now. All the content you need is contained in this guide.

Finally, we'll take a quick overview of the most up-to-date Bills, which are proposed legislation that has not yet passed to become law. This material is unlikely to appear on the Jurisprudence exam, but may be very relevant and important for you to know about.

Just in case these links ever go out-of-date, they can always be accessed from the Maryland Board of Massage Therapy Examiners' website.
One of the benefits of this guide is the use of live hyperlinks to help you easily navigate and refer between various sections of law within and outside of these statutes. Because the law is a living, changing thing; links may occasionally break or get out-dated. If you find broken or incorrect links, please report them by clicking on the “Contact” button at the bottom of every page (footer).
